Invisalign®

Invisalign aligners are an effective orthodontic treatment option for straightening your teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. These are thin, transparent and removable plastic aligners, usually computer-generated from a mold (or impression) of a patient’s teeth. An entire series of these aligners are made and given to you. You have to use these interchangeably every two weeks for a period of six to eighteen months, or longer.

Invisalign is considered perfect for adults and older teens whose jaws have finished growing, and who have mild to moderate alignment problems.

Pros

  • Comfortable: Its plastic material with soft edges doesn’t irritate the soft tissues in your mouth.

  • Safe: FDA-verified BPA free material, which means there are no harmful chemicals.

  • Ease of care: Take out the aligners, brush them, brush your teeth, and then place them back.

  • Less painful: There are no metal wires involved which means no worry about popping free, cut, or scrape on the gums, or inside your lips.

  • Fewer food restrictions: You can eat almost anything. Just don’t forget to clean your aligner and teeth properly.

  • No embarrassment: Smile freely and confidently as these thin, transparent aligners are hardly noticeable from a normal standing distance.

Cons

  • Cannot fix severe malocclusion: Not effective in cases such as severely rotated teeth, severely tipped teeth, crowded teeth, large tooth spacing, and other difficult situations.

  • Demand your full cooperation: You’ll need to wear Invisalign for at least 22 hours per day. Irregular use may allow your previous progress to relapse.

  • Tooth issues may cause problems: Any new restoration or dental treatment may interfere with the ideal tooth-to-aligner relationship.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are more common and an established orthodontic treatment option that involves the use of metal brackets and wires for teeth straightening. Modern braces use smaller brackets as well as colorful bands so the patient could match their braces to personal preference.

Traditional metal braces are more suitable for children as they require lower maintenance, and can treat severe cases of misalignment and teeth rotation.

Pros

  • Fewer replacements: Braces are strong and attached to your teeth and require replacements or adjustments only after 4-6 weeks.

  • Fix most difficult conditions: Traditional braces can tackle even the most misaligned, crooked, crowded, and spaced out teeth conditions.

  • Come in different varieties: Modern braces come in various designs and colors, so you can customize it to fit your personality.

  • Faster results: As metal braces are attached to your teeth and are non-removable, they deliver faster results.

Cons

  • Uncomfortable: Metal brackets and wires could irritate the tissues in your mouth.

  • Affect your smile: Metal braces are not visually appealing which can lower someone’s confidence.

  • More food restrictions: Hard and crunchy foods can damage your braces.

  • Can be troubling sometimes: Soreness for a few weeks. It can cause cuts in the internal mouth tissue.
