Top Five Myths about Teeth Whitening

Top Five Myths about Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most common procedures we provide at Stellar Dental and, yet, it is also one of the most misunderstood. Teeth whitening is one of the least invasive dental procedures, but many dental patients avoid it because of some misinformation. Instead of coming to us, they opt for do-it-yourself (DIY) or over the counter (OTC) whitening methods, which can be used incorrectly and actually hurt your teeth. The last thing we want is for our patients to be harmed by the products they’ve used because they’ve been afraid to come to see us. We don’t want our patients to miss out on a great-looking smile because of bad information. So we are here to set the record straight on professional teeth whitening.

Myths about teeth whitening

Myth No. 1: Teeth Whitening Causes Sensitivity

Though it is true that 50 percent to 75 percent of patients who whiten their teeth will feel some sensitivity, this is only a mild side effect is only temporary. Possible gum irritation and sensitivity should fade within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. If you are considering teeth whitening and have experienced tooth sensitivity in the past, let Dr. Gotora know ahead of time. Our staff will take extra precautions and provide special sensitivity toothpaste to help reduce your discomfort.

Myth No. 2: Teeth Whitening Treatment is Inconvenient

As with all our procedures, we strive to make teeth whitening as convenient and comfortable as possible. This is why, in addition to in-office treatment, we provide a custom whitening method that patients can take home with them. We design the customized trays from moldings so they fit comfortably and patients can perform teeth whitening on their own schedule.

Myth No. 3: Teeth Whitening is Expensive

Myths about Teeth WhiteningAt Stellar Dental, we strive to offer affordable cosmetic treatments. Compared to over-the-counter treatments and at-home remedies, professional teeth whitening can seem a bit pricey. However, the results are fast, longer-lasting, more natural looking, and noticeable. You could spend money time and time again on OTC whitening kits and never achieve the full results of professional teeth whitening.

Myth No. 4: Teeth Whitening Damages the Enamel

None of the products we use for teeth whitening are harsh or damaging. That is the benefit of seeking professional whitening your teeth. The whitening gels and low-intensity light of Zoom! are completely monitored by our dentists. The procedure is safe, convenient and produces results within a one-hour appointment.

Myth No. 5: You Shouldn’t Whiten Your Teeth before Age 30

Whiten Your Teeth before Age 30Though we do not recommend teeth whitening for children or teens, usually clients in their 20s are suitable candidates for the procedure. Children and teenagers may have teeth that are not fully emerged. If teeth are whitened before they’ve completely come in, there may be a noticeable darkening toward the gum line once they’re done erupting. It is difficult for our dentist to rectify this condition. So instead, we err on the side of caution and recommend that our patients wait until all adult teeth are well in place.
